Slovak energy aid has already cost more than four billion euros. The government wants to continue this system despite warnings that the aid is significantly non-targeted and does not sufficiently focus on households that are most threatened by high energy costs.

The Council for Budget Responsibility warned that continuing the almost blanket subsidization of prices is costly for public finances. According to the council, the support is not provided sufficiently selectively, since households that do not need it given their financial situation also benefit from it. pravda.sk ↗

The International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development also warn about the insufficient targeting of Slovak energy aid. Their objections relate mainly to the fact that blanket price subsidization increases state costs and does not lead to effectively focusing aid on the most vulnerable population groups. Trend ↗

The continuation of energy aid thus remains a question not only of social support, but also of the sustainability of public spending. Critics of the system are pushing for a more targeted model that would concentrate aid on households with the greatest difficulties paying energy bills. However, according to available information, the government plans to continue providing the support.
