The EU Kids Act versus Slovakia's age limit of 16

On 17 September 2026 the Commission proposed the EU Kids Act, setting a single EU-wide minimum age of 15 for a minor's own social media account. Slovakia's bill with a limit of 16 is still in parliament. The Commission has responded to the Slovak bill in the TRIS notification procedure and it is known whether it asks for the social media provisions to be removed.
Following the EU proposal, the Slovak education ministry has kept, changed or dropped the age limit of 16.
Member states in the Council have agreed a position on the proposal and it is known whether they allow higher national age limits.
The French parliament has passed a new law replacing the one struck down by the Constitutional Council.
The Australian regulator has issued its first fine to a platform that failed to enforce the age limit.
