Sokol myšiar je dravec z čeľade sokolovitých. Spolu s myšiakom lesným patria k najrozšírenejším dravcom v strednej Európe. Hniezdi takmer na celom Slovensku od nížin až do 2 300 m n. m. Často obýva mestské obydlia a je známy svojím typickým trepotavým letom. Podľa Medzinárodnej únie na ochranu prírody a prírodných zdrojov sokol myšiar patrí medzi najmenej ohrozené druhy, celková populácia klesá, počty v európskej populácie klesli v priebehu troch generácií, posledných 16,2 rokov o 25 %. V štátoch Burkina, Mali, Niger a v severnom Kamerune poklesli stavy sokola myšiara v rokoch 1969 – 1973 a 2000 – 2004 vo všetkých skúmaných miesta, a to aj v chránených územiach aj mimo chránených území, o 75 – 94 %.
