Fjord je špeciálny typ morského zálivu, pozostatok po činnosti ľadovca v ľadovej dobe. Je to dlhý a úzky morský záliv, ktorý vzniká v hornatých oblastiach v blízkosti morí a oceánov prehĺbením údolí riek vplyvom tlaku postupujúcich ľadovcov. Fjordy majú strmé svahy, ktoré sú často podmývané ľadovcami až pod hladinu mora, kde môže more dosahovať značnú hĺbku, netypickú pre pobrežné šelfové oblasti. Údolie má tvar písmena U. Názov fjord pochádza zo staronórčiny, zo slova fjörðr, ktoré sa prepisovalo ako fjorthr. Z jeho výslovnosti neskôr vzniklo celosvetové slovo fjord.
