V roku 1999 malo 137 154 obyvateľov, čo ho v tejto štatistike radí na 21. miesto vo Francúzsku. Mesto sa nachádza na úpätí sopečného pásma Chaine des Puys a dominuje mu vyhasnutá sopka Puy-de-Dôme, podľa ktorej je pomenovaný aj celý departement.
