Wenders withdraws film featuring scene of Nastassja Kinski

German director Wim Wenders announced on Wednesday that he is temporarily withdrawing his 1975 film "Falsche Bewegung" from public screening. The reason is a controversial scene in which actress Nastassja Kinski is shown nude or partially nude as a 13-year-old. France24 ↗

According to a statement from the foundation bearing the director's name, streaming services, television broadcasters, cinemas and distribution companies are to be called upon to no longer make the film publicly available. Wenders has also apologized to Kinski. He acknowledged that he should have protected her better during filming. Le Monde ↗

The dispute reopened after Kinski had long called for the removal of the scene in question from the film. According to available information, she had sought to have it cut for approximately ten years, and her legal representative had threatened legal action. Journalist and feminist Alice Schwarzer also entered the debate, publicly calling on Wenders to remove the controversial two minutes from the film. n-tv ↗

The film, now more than five decades old, has thus become the subject of a broader discussion about the responsibility of filmmakers, the rights of child actors, and subsequent interventions in older works. The further course of action is not yet definitively known, as the film has been withdrawn provisionally and the debate is focused on the possible removal of the controversial scene. Le Figaro ↗
