Verstappen claimed his first pole position of the season at Sepang

Max Verstappen of Red Bull dominated qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit. The four-time world champion secured his first pole position of the season and will start from the front row in Sunday's race. Der Standard ↗

The Dutchman was 0.298 seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari in qualifying. The British driver took second place and will therefore start alongside Verstappen on the front row. Third place goes to Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, who fell behind the two fastest drivers. idnes.cz ↗

The result means that, based on the season so far, Verstappen is on pole for the first time this year. Formula 1 returned to Malaysia and raced at the Sepang circuit again. The last race on this track took place in 2017, when Verstappen won there. sport.cz - hokej ↗

Mercedes arrived for the weekend with a comprehensive package of upgrades, but according to preliminary results it did not make it into the top two in qualifying, and Antonelli took third place. Verstappen will have the advantage of starting from the front in the race, while Hamilton will try to make use of second place at Ferrari. Telex ↗

According to published data, the Malaysian Grand Prix is the sixteenth event of the 23 races in the world championship season. The season is set to culminate in the December finale in Abu Dhabi. Spiegel.de ↗
