Venezuela extradites Maduro confidant Saab to the United States

On Saturday, May 17, the Venezuelan government extradited foreign businessman Alex Saab to the United States. Saab, born in Colombia, was one of the key long-term creditors and associates of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Tagesschau ↗

According to statements by the Venezuelan migration service, Saab faces several charges from American justice in the United States. In recent years, the businessman was involved in managing an extensive network for the import of goods for the Venezuelan government during Maduro's tenure. His activities included manipulation and corrupt practices, which over time transformed him from a different standing into one of the most influential economic actors of the regime. Saab's extradition holds particular significance in light of recent political changes in Venezuela. After the attack of January 3 and Maduro's fall from power, Saab was detained in February of this year. Now the new Venezuelan government is formally extraditing him to American authorities to face judicial proceedings. Le Figaro ↗

For Saab, this is his second stay in an American prison. He had previously spent approximately two years in American custody before being pardoned by President Joe Biden. Saab's extradition could provide American justice officials with important testimony in the criminal proceedings against Maduro himself, who is being prosecuted in the United States for alleged narcotics offenses and other crimes.
