US imposes sanctions on Cuban president and the Castro family
According to the published information, members of the family of former Cuban leader Raúl Castro also appeared on the sanctions list, including his son and one of his grandsons. The measures also concern individuals connected to the president's family circle and to the Cuban armed forces. Washington is thereby expanding financial restrictions on representatives of the Cuban regime and their relatives. NOS ↗
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that those who provide services to individuals placed on the sanctions list could also be exposed to the risk of sanctions. The Trump administration has also repeatedly increased pressure on Cuba, and according to some reports, the president has recently even threatened military action against the island. Die Zeit ↗
Tensions between the United States and Cuba are thus deepening further. The new sanctions are part of a broader Washington campaign aimed at restricting the room for maneuver of the Cuban leadership and increasing pressure for change in the country. The Guardian ↗
