US Ambassador to Japan George Glass stated on Friday, August 14, that the United States recognizes Japan's sovereignty over the Kuril Islands. He commented after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril Islands, which provoked reactions from both Tokyo and Washington. Onet Wiadomosci ↗
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already summoned Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Nikolai Nozdrev on Thursday, August 13. It delivered a protest statement in connection with Putin's visit. Japanese diplomacy thus demonstrated its disagreement with the Russian president's trip to territory over which Tokyo emphasizes its claims. hnonline.sk ↗
Glass's statement escalated the dispute into a broader diplomatic framework, as Washington publicly sided with Japan. The American response followed the step taken by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and confirmed US support for the Japanese position on the Kuril Islands.
Putin's visit thus opened further tension between Moscow and Tokyo. The development will depend on whether Russia responds to Japan's protest and the US ambassador's statement with further diplomatic steps. ekonomika.pravda.sk ↗
