Ukrainian attacks increase pressure on Moscow and Putin's regime
Crimea, which after the 2014 annexation was a symbol of Putin's power, is according to several accounts ceasing to be an untouchable fortress. Ukrainian naval drones reportedly hit an FSB patrol boat near Gelendzhik, and attacks on energy infrastructure have already been publicly acknowledged by Vladimir Putin himself. He claimed, however, that Moscow is getting the situation under control and that gasoline will be available. SITA ↗
The pressure on the Kremlin is also showing up politically and economically. Russian police previously detained opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin, who tried to run against Putin in 2024. Russian opposition activist Garry Kasparov warns that Putin has no intention of concluding peace with Ukraine, and that after the September parliamentary elections the conflict could escalate, including a threat to NATO's eastern flank. New reports also describe an imbalance in relations between Moscow and Beijing. According to them, China is preparing for the post-Putin era and maintaining contacts with Russian elites. Further developments will show whether the combination of Ukrainian attacks, fuel problems, repression of the opposition, and growing dependence on China will limit the Kremlin's ability to continue its current strategy. novinky.cz ↗
