Progressive Slovakia submitted a proposal to the National Council of the Slovak Republic to restrict changes to electoral rules within one year before regular elections. The movement proposes introducing a 12-month protection period during which the basic elements of the electoral system should not be changed shortly before voting. domov.sme.sk ↗ Aktuality.sk - Domáce ↗

The proposers argue that such a step should strengthen the stability and predictability of the rules. According to them, it should also increase the confidence of citizens and political actors in the electoral process and democratic institutions. The proposal concerns primarily changes that could affect the rules shortly before parliamentary elections. teraz.sk ↗ teraz.sk ↗

The aim of the initiative is to prevent situations where electoral rules are adjusted shortly before elections are held. PS is responding to the need for a longer-term framework that would be in place sufficiently in advance and would not be subject to rapid interventions before voting. The proposal will now be reviewed by the MPs and it will be crucial whether it gains support in the plenary. hnonline.sk ↗ bratislava.zoznam.sk ↗
