Tisza Nominates András Baka for President of Hungary
Baka previously also served as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights. He came to broader international attention after being removed from his position as chief judge of the Hungarian Supreme Court in 2011. This happened following his criticism of the planned judicial reforms by Viktor Orbán's government. Die Zeit ↗
The nomination therefore carries significant symbolic meaning. Tisza, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, chose a personality associated with the issue of judicial independence and the rule of law. Baka is to replace the party's previous candidate and his selection comes at a time when attention in Hungary is again focusing on the relationship between political power and the judiciary. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
If parliament confirms the nomination, Baka will become Hungary's new president. His election would bring a former senior judge with direct experience of the dispute over Hungarian judicial reforms to the presidential office. ct24.ceskatelevize.cz ↗
