Babiš's dispute with Pavel continues even after the NATO summit
The tension followed a dispute over who was supposed to represent the Czech Republic at the alliance summit. Both constitutional officials arrived in Turkey separately, and their delegations proceeded independently. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini confirmed that the composition of the Czech delegation attracted attention, though his account differed from Babiš's interpretation, and according to him it was rather the prime minister's conduct that caused the stir. Meanwhile, a survey among the Czech public showed that more than 70 percent of people consider the country's representation at the summit an embarrassment. novinky.cz ↗
Security matters have now also been added to the tension. The Czech Republic is missing from the European coalition that, together with Ukraine, wants to build defense against ballistic missiles, which experts describe as a missed opportunity. At the same time, the opposition is demanding the release of Babiš's speech from Ankara, among other reasons because of his stance on the coalition of the willing and on aid to Ukraine. novinky.cz ↗
Behind the political scenes, the next presidential election is already being discussed. If Babiš wants to get Pavel out of the Castle, according to new information he will have to quickly find his own candidate; the absence of a communist past is cited as an important condition. Further developments will determine whether the dispute shifts mainly to the Constitutional Court, or becomes a long-term part of the campaign against the current president. seznamzpravy.cz ↗
