Chamber of Deputies to begin debating abolition of TV and radio license fees

The governing coalition of ANO, SPD and Motorists pushed through a priority debate on the proposal to abolish television and radio license fees in the Chamber of Deputies on Friday. The reordering of this item was proposed by Radim Fiala, chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. The proposal became the first item on the lower house's agenda. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗

The bill envisages abolishing fees for Czech Television and Czech Radio and transferring their financing to the state budget. Deputies unexpectedly began debating the proposal during Friday's session, even though it was not originally scheduled as the first item. lupa.cz ↗

The coalition also pushed through the possibility of continuing deliberations on Saturday as well. The Chamber can sit until night on Friday and then continue debating laws over the weekend. The opposition is protesting against the governing parties' procedure and has announced obstruction. forum24.cz ↗

The proposal is now awaiting debate in the Chamber, the length of which may be affected precisely by opposition resistance. Deputies will decide not only on the abolition of the fees itself, but also on the future method of financing public-service media. Further developments will depend on the course of the debate and on whether the coalition manages to push the bill's approval through despite opposition obstruction.
