Slovak Radio Marks One Hundred Years of Broadcasting

On Monday, August 3, 2026, Slovakia marked one hundred years since the start of regular radio broadcasting. The first regular broadcast from Bratislava was launched by the Bratislava branch of Radiojournal on August 3, 1926, when the first words of Slovak Radio were heard on the airwaves. vedanadosah.cvtisr.sk ↗

The beginnings of broadcasting were modest. At first, programming was broadcast only twice a week, but it gradually gained intensity. Radio later became a medium that brought news of events that changed history, and its news tradition continues today through Rádiožurnál. STVR (Spravy) ↗

The anniversary was also marked by program and public events. The first Slovak radio presenter, Štefan Horský, recalled the beginnings of Slovak Radio's broadcasting in the show Dobré ráno, which also opened space for spontaneous contributions. At the same time, the Slovak Radio gallery prepared an exhibition dedicated to the anniversaries of radio and television broadcasting in Slovakia. The exhibition is open to the public. teraz.sk ↗

One hundred years of radio broadcasting also shows the technological transformation of the media. Radio evolved from large receivers resembling a cabinet to podcasts available on smartphones. The anniversary therefore recalls not only the historic start of broadcasting from Bratislava, but also the ongoing change in the way listeners receive news and programming. STVR (Spravy) ↗
