Since November 1, 2026, a drug policy reform has been in effect in Slovakia. The change is based on an amendment to the law on the scope and conditions of reimbursement for medicines, medical devices and dietetic foods. Its aim is to increase the availability of treatment covered by public health insurance. teraz.sk ↗

The reform also regulates the conditions under which patients can be reimbursed for medicines on an exception basis. These are medicines that are not standardly reimbursed under the regular regime, but in specific cases a health insurance company may approve them based on an application and an assessment of the patient's health condition. domov.sme.sk ↗

The amendment also concerns the reimbursement of medical devices and dietetic foods. The changes are meant to unify and adjust the rules according to which the availability of selected treatment from public health insurance is assessed. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗

Part of the reform is an effort to improve patients' access to innovative treatment. The legislation is intended to create conditions so that new treatment options can reach patients more easily and on a broader scale. Refresher.sk ↗

The practical impact of the reform will concern patients, health insurance companies and healthcare providers alike. The specific assessment of individual applications and reimbursements will continue to be based on the rules set out by law and on the decisions of the relevant health insurance companies.
