The US Open tennis tournament delivered epic five-set duels for American players. Ben Shelton met defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a dramatic quarterfinal. After a tough battle in the fifth-set tiebreak, Shelton defeated the Spanish tennis player and advanced to the semifinal. sport.sk ↗ Le Figaro ↗
Frances Tiafoe also fought his way into the final four. In the quarterfinal against fellow countryman Alex Michelsen, he initially had major problems and was significantly behind in the first part of the match. However, Tiafoe turned the course of the match around and came back into contention from a disadvantageous position. In the end, he managed to win the match and defeated Michelsen. After the match, Tiafoe also emotionally comforted his defeated countryman. Michelsen realized he had been close to a great achievement, which brought tears to his eyes. sport.sk ↗ STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
Tiafoe and Shelton will therefore meet in the semifinal, with both being American tennis players. In the other semifinal, one of the players will face the winner of the quarterfinal between the other players in the tournament. Shelton's win over Alcaraz represents a surprising result, since Alcaraz was seeded second and was defending his title from last year's US Open. Der Standard ↗ Tagesspiegel ↗
