Serena Williams failed in her return to grand slam singles and was eliminated from Wimbledon 2026 already in the first round. The forty-four-year-old American lost on Centre Court to twenty-year-old Australian Maya Joint 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:6. ta3.com ↗
For Williams, this was her first singles match on the grand slam stage in almost four years. On the court where she won seven singles titles, she was greeted by applause from the crowd before the match. In the second set she fended off the threat of a quick finish, won the tiebreak, and forced a deciding set. In it, however, the unseeded Joint, who according to available data is the world's 87th-ranked player, had the upper hand. BBC News ↗
The match showed that Williams, even after a long break, retained the strength of her serve, with her service reaching speeds of around 120 miles per hour. The main problem was her movement and the closing stages of the match, in which the fitness gap between the former champion and an opponent more than two decades younger became apparent. kultura.pravda.sk ↗
With the win, Joint secured her progression to the second round and achieved one of the most significant victories of her career to date. In Williams's case, it remains open whether she will continue her return to the top level after the London tournament. BBC News ↗
