Since Wednesday, July 1, Russia has temporarily closed seven railway border crossings with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia. Moscow issued the order already on Tuesday evening, but gave no reason for it nor any deadline for how long the crossings are to remain closed. Hospodárske noviny ↗
The measure affects cross-border movement of people, goods, and transport on Russia's northwestern border. The move was noted by the magazine Politico as well as the Ukrainian news website Ukrayinska Pravda. The Russian side has so far offered no public explanation for it. iROZHLAS ↗
Rail links across these borders have for some time already served only limited traffic. Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, as well as the Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia, have progressively curtailed their transport and trade ties with Moscow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
