What Europe Is Writing About: Tusk Warns of Russian Attacks on NATO, Swedish PM Falls, Carney Addresses the European Parliament on Canada's Associate Membership

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warns of Russian hybrid attacks on NATO members after Poland repeatedly closed airports and scrambled fighter jets over Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine, while Trump in the meantime announced progress in talks on a permanent US military base on Polish territory. In Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson resigned after a narrow election defeat, and the center-left's Magdalena Andersson will attempt to form a new government. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the European Commission's proposal for Canada's associate membership in the EU in the European Parliament, even though Trump had already threatened the Union with harsh tariffs if it grew closer to Canada in this way. Since then, three things have been added: Tusk speaks of an intelligence warning that Russia is planning "accidental" drone and missile incidents on the territory of Ukraine's allies, including Poland, intended to test whether NATO's Article 5 is merely theory; in Sweden, the formation of a government has formally begun, with the parliament's speaker already in talks with party leaders and Andersson first in line; and Carney, in Brussels, spelled out the offer to the EU in more detail — access to energy and mineral resources as well as participation in the Erasmus program — while stressing that these would not be "zero-sum deals."

🔁 What's moving Europe today

  • Tusk: an intelligence warning says Russia is planning "accidental" drone and missile attacks on countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland — meant to test whether NATO's Article 5 is merely theory. On Friday, Poland scrambled fighter jets and halted operations at the Rzeszów and Lublin airports for the third day in a row over Russian attacks on Ukraine, while Trump in the meantime announced "significant progress" in talks on a permanent US military base in the country. Nearly all of Europe is writing about it. 🇺🇦 ↗ · 🇺🇦 ↗ · 🇩🇪 ↗ · 🇵🇱 ↗ · 🇬🇧 ↗
