What the Hungarian media are writing about today, 25 April: Orbán handed back his parliamentary mandate, Fidesz regroups
Videos
Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán returned his parliamentary mandate on Saturday and will not serve as an MP. He remains chairman of Fidesz and wants to lead the reorganization of the national camp. The victorious Tisza leader Péter Magyar responded by saying that Orbán has become "Fidesz's Gyurcsány" — a politician unable to take responsibility for a defeat. Telex ↗ HVG ↗ Magyar Nemzet ↗
Other Fidesz and KDNP politicians are also leaving: outgoing deputy prime minister and KDNP chairman Zsolt Semjén, János Latorcai, and Miklós Soltész will not take up their parliamentary mandates. The chairman of Fidesz in Szeged resigned after learning that an arrest warrant had been issued against him. László Bige, owner of fertilizer producer Nitrogénművek Zrt., criticized Orbán's camp as well as the billionaires distancing themselves from him in an interview for Index. Telex ↗ Telex ↗ Index ↗
Political scientist Gábor Török summed up the day for Telex: "The Fidesz we knew is over." A week after the elections, Magyar plans to hold the inaugural session of the new parliament on 9 May, along with reforms in the army and state media. The question remains whether criticism of Orbán from within Fidesz will spread beyond today's voices. Telex ↗
