The title was decided in the final 1,500 metres run. Neugebauer carried a lead into the last discipline, but it gradually narrowed. In the end, he maintained a margin of only 38 points. According to German reports, he almost stopped in the final stretch and fell across the finish line, but the result was enough for European gold. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Kaul pressed hard on the leader during the second day and according to interim reports remained strong even as Neugebauer's lead narrowed. The German team thus secured the top two places in the decathlon. Czech representative Vilém Stráský finished thirteenth and was the only Czech athlete to complete the competition. denik.cz ↗

Neugebauer thus added the European title to his world championship title. For Kaul, silver represents another medal from a major event. The competition in Birmingham confirmed the strong position of German multi-sport athletes, with the decisive difference between gold and silver emerging only in the final metres of the two-day programme.
