Germany's national football team is without a coach after a round-of-16 defeat to Paraguay on penalties. Julian Nagelsmann resigned following the early exit from the World Cup, and the German football association terminated his contract with immediate effect. The match in Foxborough followed high expectations after the previous game against Ecuador, but instead of confirming the favorite's role, it opened a new crisis. Die Zeit ↗
Nagelsmann had a valid contract until Euro 2028, but according to available information, his team will receive severance pay in the millions. One report cites an agreement worth seven million euros. After his departure, the former coach apologized to the fans and admitted that he had expected more from the team. Spiegel.de ↗
Jürgen Klopp is named as the leading candidate for the succession. The association has already confirmed its interest in negotiating with the former Liverpool coach, but his obligations to Red Bull, advertising contracts, and the scope of his authority remain open questions. Part of the German football community is also warning that the DFB is focusing on Klopp too openly and must have an alternative course of action prepared as well. Thomas Hitzlsperger recommended not talking to only one candidate. Tagesspiegel ↗
The crisis also affects the association's leadership. The future of Rudi Völler is being discussed, and Andreas Rettig is already set to leave at the end of the year. Lothar Matthäus criticized both the contractual arrangement with Nagelsmann and his performance. The coming days should show whether the DFB will indeed open a new era with Klopp, or whether, after a third consecutive unsuccessful World Cup, it will run into further uncertainty. n-tv ↗
