Iranian authorities on Thursday executed three men convicted for taking part in the mass protests of January 2026. The regime accuses them of murdering police officers during the demonstrations, which broke out after a dramatic surge in food and fuel prices. The names of those executed were not immediately released. The Oslo-based organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) condemned the executions as "politically motivated" and noted that some of the convicted had confessed to the acts under duress. Al Jazeera ↗

The executions come a day after the controversial execution of Swedish citizen Ahmadreza Djalali for alleged espionage on behalf of Israel. The EU's chief diplomat Kaja Kallas condemned Djalali's execution as "brutal" and called on Iran to "immediately halt all executions." The European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on Thursday morning calling for sanctions to be imposed on Iranian judges responsible for death sentences. NPR ↗

The total number of people executed in Iran since the war began on February 28 has risen to at least eight. Human rights organizations warn that the Iranian regime is using the state of war to intensify repression and speed up the execution of political prisoners. Since 2025, Iran has been the country with the highest number of executions per capita in the world. NBC News ↗
