The American immigration authority ICE detained British right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in Louisiana, who according to available records faces deportation from the United States. The detention occurred after he allegedly exceeded the permitted length of stay in the country.
Yiannopoulos came to the USA legally in 2019, but according to American authorities, he remained in the country even after his residence permit expired. Since he failed to appear at an immigration hearing, a final deportation order was issued against him. Several media outlets report that he was detained at an airport in Louisiana and on Friday afternoon was held in ICE custody. Le Monde ↗
The British commentator was among well-known figures of the American far right. In the past, he served as editor at Breitbart News, was an intern for politician Marjorie Taylor Greene, and also worked for Kanye West. He consistently appeared as a supporter of Donald Trump and publicly defended tough measures by immigration authorities, including rapid deportations of persons without valid residence status.
The case attracted attention also because Yiannopoulos had previously supported the procedures of the authority that now detained him. Further developments will depend on immigration proceedings and the execution of the already-issued deportation order. Die Zeit ↗
