NPR Music dedicated an episode of Tiny Desk Radio to the fiftieth anniversary of go-go — a genre that is a cultural phenomenon exclusive to Washington D.C. Hosts Bobby Carter and Anamaria Sayre describe it as funk with a slow, simple groove that nonetheless hides dense polyrhythms and interwoven harmonies. NPR Music ↗
The episode assembles a "Mount Rushmore of go-go" from performances by Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk, Rare Essence and E.U. Chuck Brown, who died in 2012, is recognized as the founding force of the entire genre and was known in D.C. as the Godfather of Go-Go. Rare Essence formed in 1976 and rank among the most significant names on the Washington scene, with the nationwide hit Work the Walls. NPR Music ↗
On SuperMusic.cz, go-go had until now practically not existed. Chuck Brown and Rare Essence have now been added, and Trouble Funk, who had been there for years without a single song, also got lyrics: Bustin' Loose, Chuck Baby and Run Joe by Brown, Overnight Scenario, Work the Walls and Pieces of Me by Rare Essence, and Drop the Bomb along with Pump Me Up by Trouble Funk.
Go-go turns fifty. NPR celebrates it with Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk and Rare Essence
