French state borrows more expensively than part of its companies

Markets currently view French public debt as riskier than the bonds of nearly two-fifths of French companies. Investors therefore demand a higher yield on comparable government bonds than on approximately 38 percent of corporate bonds. hnonline.sk ↗

The difference means that part of French companies are borrowing on financial markets more cheaply than the state itself. Billions of euros in corporate bonds are trading with a lower yield than the one investors demand on comparable French government securities. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

Bond yield expresses the return an investor expects for providing money. A higher required yield usually reflects higher perceived risk or lower investor interest in a given asset. The current comparison thus points to growing concerns related to the financing of French public debt.

The information comes at a time when financial markets are closely watching the state of French public finances and the conditions under which the government secures new financing. The fact that part of corporate bonds offer a lower yield may influence the assessment of the state's credit risk compared to individual companies.

Further developments will depend on how investors assess the sustainability of French public debt and future state financing needs. A change in demand for French government bonds could translate into the level of yields and the cost of servicing the debt.
