France activates health plan for heatwave

France reported its hottest day since records began on Tuesday, June 23, and the government of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu activated the Orsan EPI-CLIM plan at the second level. The preliminary nationwide temperature indicator, an average from 30 stations, reached 29.8 degrees Celsius. teraz.sk ↗

Since Sunday, the country had already been restricting alcohol consumption at several events linked to the Fête de la Musique festival, particularly in parts of Paris and other locations under a red warning level. Authorities took measures regarding the combination of mass gatherings, alcohol and extreme temperatures. The heatwave also affected sporting and cultural events, schools were closed, and emergency measures were being prepared for the most affected regions. Tagesspiegel ↗

Deaths while swimming became a new problem. During the heatwave, 40 people drowned in France as residents sought to cool off in rivers, lakes, canals and other often unsupervised bodies of water. The government also warned of the risks of swimming outside controlled locations. SITA ↗

The Orsan plan is meant to coordinate the healthcare system during extreme climate conditions. The European heatwave also hit Spain, Italy and Britain, where authorities reported nighttime temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, red alerts, cancelled trains and other restrictions. Le Figaro ↗
