Fed left rates unchanged despite pressure to cut them
The Fed explained its decision by stating that economic activity in the US continues to expand at a solid pace, although inflation remains above target. According to available reports, the central bank attributes part of the inflationary pressures to shocks in supply chains. Despite the persisting risk of higher inflation, it therefore decided not to change the price of money. Die Zeit ↗
The decision was accompanied by political pressure from the White House. Donald Trump called Kevin Warsh excellent and said that, in his view, Warsh would like to see lower rates, but that he sits on a board Trump described as heavily politicized. Information from sources also suggests that there was no complete agreement within the decision-making process, as part of the committee members supported a rate change of 25 basis points. ANSA ↗
Financial markets reacted with a decline. US stocks weakened significantly, and the Dow Jones recorded its steepest drop since April 2025. In addition to the Fed's decision, investors were also watching the escalation of the war in Iran and concerns related to artificial intelligence. Further developments will depend mainly on inflation, economic performance, and whether pressure for lower rates prevails within the Fed's leadership. n-tv ↗
