EU Threatens Russia with Sanctions After Drone Attack in Leipzig
Videos
Germany has officially attributed responsibility for the attack to Russia. The European Union summoned Russia's ambassador in Brussels in connection with the attempted hybrid attack. According to available information, an explosives-laden drone was discovered at the airport in early August, and Moscow is suspected of being behind this act. hnonline.sk ↗
The issue came up during talks between ministers in Ireland alongside broader discussion about Russian hybrid activities against Europe and support for Ukraine. Kallas had already stated on Tuesday in Wicklow that Russia is using hybrid attacks to deter the European Union from supporting Kyiv, but according to her, it will not succeed. She also called on Ukraine's allies to strengthen its air defense. STVR (Minute by Minute) ↗
The expected sanctions package is to be a response to Russian conduct and to security threats which, according to member states, go beyond the scope of the war in Ukraine. Further developments will depend on EU countries' agreement on the scope of new measures and on how member states evaluate the evidence presented by Germany.
