Slavia and Sparta derby ends in scandal, Slavia fans ran onto the pitch and attacked Surovčík

Prague's league derby between the Slavia and Sparta footballers became the scene of a huge scandal on Saturday, May 9. The match was interrupted in the seventh minute of stoppage time by home Slavia fans who ran onto the pitch. At that time, Slavia was leading 3:2, which would have secured them the defense of the championship title. During the fans' incursion, Sparta goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík was attacked, being pulled out of the raging crowd by one of the Slavia fans. Surovčík suffered an injury with lasting effects. Sparta subsequently refused to continue the match, and the derby remained unfinished. irozhlas.cz ↗

Police are investigating the incident on suspicion of disorderly conduct, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison. Police have expanded the list of crimes under investigation, and besides the attack on the goalkeeper are also investigating the throwing of lit flares into the away sector, damaged LED panels, and toilets. One of the aggressors, who personally attacked Surovčík, turned himself in. Slavia's management imposed a lifetime stadium ban on him. novinky.cz ↗

Slavia's management condemned the scandal. Chairman of the Board Jaroslav Tvrdík described the fans' behavior as unacceptable and called it the biggest disgrace in his 11 years working at the club. Slavia closed the north stand, home to the loudest fans, until further notice, and dropped players Chorý and Douděra from the team. The club also announced it would demand compensation for all damages caused from the perpetrators and would not appeal against any verdict of the disciplinary commission. ct24.ceskatelevize.cz ↗

In its statement, Sparta views the incident not as an isolated excess but as the culmination of a long-cultivated atmosphere of hatred toward the club. The Disciplinary Commission of the League Football Association has opened proceedings against Slavia. A decision on a possible forfeit and penalties was expected to be made on Tuesday. The incident also drew the attention of international media and provoked criticism from Czech politicians, who called it a disgrace and a setback for football by twenty years. idnes.cz ↗
