Cyndi Lauper to sing at the 25th anniversary of September 11 under the beams of Tribute in Light
Videos
American television network ABC is preparing a one-hour program titled 9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. It will feature three musicians — Cyndi Lauper, country singer Lainey Wilson, and John Ondrasik, frontman of the band Five For Fighting. It will be hosted by David Muir, Robin Roberts, and Diane Sawyer. American Songwriter ↗
For Lauper, it's a personal matter. "It's hard to believe twenty-five years have passed. Like many of us, it feels like it was yesterday. That morning I was out of town and desperate to get back to my family — which was a luxury that, sadly, a lot of people didn't have," she said. "I'm honored to sing for them, for those we lost, for the families and friends who remain, and for my city." American Songwriter ↗
Ondrasik will perform "Superman," his band's hit from 2000, which became one of the songs associated with first responders after the attacks. In a press release, Wilson said she views the courage and sacrifice of first responders as a reminder of who Americans are. American Songwriter ↗
All three will perform from the base of the Tribute in Light installation. The twin beams reach as high as four miles and have illuminated the New York skyline every September 11 since 2002. American Songwriter ↗
For Cyndi Lauper, this is no random invitation — New York is her hometown, and her body of work is part of what even the generation that wasn't alive in the eighties associates with that decade. Both "True Colors" and "Time After Time" are still played today as songs about mutual support, which is exactly the register such an evening needs. On SuperMusic.cz, chords are available for both, and lyrics for the latter.
