The Police's blond hair was created for a chewing gum commercial that never aired
In 1978, Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers were flat broke and took on almost anything that came their way. They also accepted a role in a commercial for Wrigley's Spearmint Gum, directed by Tony Scott — with a condition they didn't expect: they had to bleach their hair blond. Far Out Magazine ↗
It was quite a significant request, since all three knew how much image influenced success at the time. What's more, the commercial never actually aired, even though it featured fairly intense visuals — according to Summers, including a scene in which they "carry a two-metre-long pack of Wrigley's across the room." The bleached hair, however, stayed: once all three saw how they looked, they realized they liked it. The blond fringe became a permanent part of their image. Far Out Magazine ↗
Interestingly, during this same period Sting and Summers had a stint in the ensemble of German composer Eberhard Schoener, which brought them television exposure in Germany — and according to the magazine, this partly paved the way for the band's later popularity in that country. Far Out Magazine ↗
