Biró calls for scrutiny of the Orbán era, former PM heads to Brussels
The Integrity Authority was established in 2022 as part of reforms pushed through by Brussels. Its task is to oversee the handling of European money in Hungary and to strengthen controls following the European Union's long-standing objections to the state of the rule of law and public procurement in the country. According to available information, Biró claims that large-scale theft of EU funds took place during Orbán's government. teraz.sk ↗
At the same time, Orbán will return to Brussels next week for the first time since his election defeat in April. He will attend a gathering of the European alliance Patriots for Europe, where he is set to appear alongside Andrej Babiš. For the former Hungarian prime minister, this will be his first significant return to the European political scene since losing power in Budapest. pravda.sk ↗
In parallel, Brussels is also addressing the use of a long-blocked fund worth 6.6 billion euros, intended to compensate member states for weapons supplied to Ukraine. Developments surrounding Hungarian EU funds thus remain part of a broader debate on the oversight of European money and its use in member states. SITA ↗
