Berlin addresses failure of oversight over Abdul B. after CSD attack

After the attack on Berlin's Christopher Street Day, German authorities are examining how 21-year-old Abdul B. could carry out an attack despite being known to security services. In Saturday's incident on July 25 in the Tiergarten area, a white van drove into a crowd of people. A 65-year-old woman from Poland died, and at least 16 people were injured. NOS ↗

The suspect is no longer on the run. After the act, police tracked him down to an empty allotment garden plot in Spandau, where he was shot dead during the operation. Investigators are examining whether he had accomplices or people who knew about the preparation of the attack. A second detained man was released because the suspicion against him was not confirmed. idnes.cz ↗

New information shows that Abdul B. was under the surveillance of security authorities. The Berlin State Criminal Police Office reportedly monitored him for weeks, and according to media reports, a camera captured him roughly an hour before the attack. His risk potential was assessed as high. In May, he was convicted in connection with terrorist plans, but remained free, and according to available information he was supposed to undergo deradicalization outside of prison. Spiegel.de ↗

The case has sparked a debate in Germany about stricter measures against dangerous individuals. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is calling for tougher rules, including preventive detention, and criticizes the application of juvenile criminal law to adult offenders. Representatives of the Greens are first calling for a thorough analysis of the case. Berlin is also strengthening security measures at further CSD events. Die Zeit ↗
