Vučić announced his decision on Monday, September 14. After stepping down from the presidential mandate, he wants to join the election battle to be elected to parliament and subsequently seek the post of prime minister. idnes.cz ↗

His decision comes at a time of long-running protests against the Serbian government. The student movement is also preparing to enter the electoral race, having collected signatures across the country in two days to support its own candidate list. That list contains 250 candidates. svet.sme.sk ↗

The student protests broke out after the collapse of a concrete canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024. 14 people died in the event. Since then, students have been criticizing conditions in the country and the government's actions. teraz.sk ↗

Vučić criticized the students' candidate list, calling it nameless. In the parliamentary elections, he may thus face a movement that has been protesting against his power for more than a year. ta3.com ↗

The expected political development will depend on the outcome of the October elections. Vučić's departure from the presidential office could change the distribution of the country's top state functions, while his continued involvement in politics is set to continue through his candidacy for parliament.
