On Saturday, March 28, Zdeněk Svěrák celebrated his ninetieth birthday at Jára Cimrman's Žižkov Theatre in an extensive nationwide program that was broadcast to approximately one hundred eighty cinemas across the country. A special part of the program was a composed sketch called Defense Against Death, which ran ninety minutes and acquainted the audience with the personality and work of the birthday celebrant. irozhlas.cz ↗ irozhlas.cz ↗
Dozens of well-known personalities from the acting, film, and television world appeared among the guests. President Petr Pavel was also present, and Svěrák expressed his gratitude to him. Those present, including actors Daniela Kolářová and Jiří Šíp, as well as Svěrák's son Jan, who brought his father his winning Oscar, enjoyed the evening together. The program also included musical numbers and stories from Svěrák's rich life. novinky.cz ↗ zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
The course of the celebrations revealed that, while delivering his thanks, Svěrák emphasized that humor is a rare gift that allows one to honorably wage even battles already lost. During the evening there were also personal gestures – the birthday celebrant devoted his time and attention to his wife, carefully examined the gifts he received, and took away autographs and memories from his friends. His departure from the celebration had an emotional tone, with Svěrák thanking all those present for their presence and support. The celebration thus confirmed his position as one of the most significant figures in Czech culture over the past sixty-plus years. denik.cz ↗ extra.cz ↗
