Donald Trump, following the Republicans' significant defeat in the congressional elections, refused to take full responsibility for the outcome. In a phone interview with Fox News, he stated that his name was not on the ballots, and he blamed the failure mainly on Republican candidates. El Mundo ↗
At the same time, the president declared that he is ready to accept the election results and, in some areas, to cooperate with the Democrats. According to preliminary projections, the Democratic Party was heading toward gaining control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which represents a serious political blow to Trump's administration. In the interview, Trump admitted that the war in Iran partly contributed to the Republicans' defeat. However, he also emphasized the weakness of the party's candidates and refused to take responsibility for their results, even though he had supported many of them before the elections. Le Figaro ↗
During election night, he also commented on Fox News itself. He said he turned off the broadcast because the anchorwoman's voice bothered him. This remark was related to his previous attacks on Jessica Tarlov, the liberal commentator on the show The Five. Tarlov responded to Trump's attacks by asking why he was focusing on her when, in her view, he had more important duties. idnes.cz ↗
The election result may limit Trump's ability to push through legislation while also intensifying internal disputes among Republicans. Further developments will show whether the president chooses a confrontational approach or attempts to seek a compromise with the Democrats.
