Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced his resignation on Tuesday following the tragic train collision that killed 69 people on October 28. After speaking in parliament, he stated that the transport minister could not remain in office after two serious railway accidents in the country within less than a year. TVN24.pl ↗
Puente also announced that he would not run in the early parliamentary elections to be held on November 29. He also stepped down as the head of the Socialist Party's candidate list in the province of Valladolid. He justified his decision on grounds of political dignity and responsibility following the tragedy. El Pais ↗
“Quiero estar a la altura de mi país,” Puente said in explaining his departure. According to available data, the two serious high-speed railway accidents in Spain this year have claimed a total of 115 victims. idnes.cz ↗
The resignation triggered political reactions across the country. The opposition People's Party called it insufficient and criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for having appointed Puente to the post. The Vox party claimed that the prime minister was hiding behind the minister. Coalition and government partners, on the other hand, welcomed his decision as a show of political dignity. Puente was among Prime Minister Sánchez's close associates. His departure therefore weakens the government ahead of the November elections and raises questions about the next steps in the investigation into the railway accidents. El Mundo ↗
