France to deploy 70,000 police officers for weekend protests

France expects further protests on Saturday, and authorities will deploy approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes. Security forces will oversee 150 planned rallies, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warning of a very high risk of public order disruption and violence. The Guardian ↗

The protests were called by the Yellow Vests movement, trade unions and student associations. The organizers want to draw attention mainly to the rising cost of living. This is the third weekend of mobilization following the unrest and looting that occurred two weeks ago. teraz.sk ↗

In Paris, the march originally planned between Bastille and Place de la Nation will ultimately not be authorized. France's Council of State overturned the decision of the administrative court, which had approved the original route. The only authorized march in Paris will follow a peripheral route between the Porte de Bagnolet and Porte de Charenton gates, thereby avoiding the city center. Le Figaro ↗

The CGT trade union confederation called on its members to take part in the sole authorized march despite its objections. Authorities also warned that participants may not cover their faces during Halloween night in order to conceal their identity or prepare violent acts. Le Figaro ↗

The security measures are intended to address concerns that masks could be used by people seeking to avoid identification. Police and gendarmerie will remain on standby throughout the day, depending on how the situation develops at individual rallies. Der Standard ↗
