Government wants to enshrine the Czech koruna as currency in the constitution
Videos
The initiative came from representatives of the governing parties Motoristé and SPD. The proposal is to explicitly designate the koruna as the currency of the Czech Republic, which would mean that any future change of currency would require a more complex legislative procedure than an ordinary change of law.
The Czech government agreed to support the proposal on October 27. Available information does not make clear when Parliament would deal with the proposal, nor which opposition parties might support it. A constitutional change requires broader agreement across political parties.
The debate over the proposal has also provoked critical reactions. Danuše Nerudová, in connection with the support for enshrining the koruna in the constitution, ridiculed MEP Filip Turek. Her remark appeared in the form: "When the head is empty, not even a full library helps." forum24.cz ↗
Further progress will depend primarily on the opposition's stance. If the government does not obtain the necessary votes, enshrining the koruna in the constitution will not be possible. The proposal may thus open a wider political debate about the Czech Republic's future relationship to the euro.
