Spectrum Quartett releases Abduction of Europa, a melodrama for two actors and a string quartet
The Slovak ensemble Spectrum Quartett released the album Únos Európy (Abduction of Europa) on September 30, 2026. It is a melodrama that transfers into sound form the production of the same name by Debris Company. Its basis is original music by Vladislav Šarišský for string quartet and a text by Peter Lomnický. The spoken word is performed by Sláva Daubnerová and Peter Kadlečík. It was directed by Jozef Vlk, and the album is released by Real Music House. Real Music House ↗
The production premiered on March 29, 2017 at the A4 space in Bratislava and forms the second part of a trilogy by Debris Company, framed by the productions WOW! and Jób. The publisher describes the original production as an "intellectual concert" with a minimalist stage, light, movement, and a live quartet. According to it, the album focuses on what works even without the visual image: the tension between word and music, the rhythm of speech, and the sound of the strings. Real Music House ↗
The starting point is the ancient myth of the abduction of Europa, transposed into the present day. The text deals with questions of identity, boundaries, power, and human dignity, with both irony and black humor. One of the principles of the original production was the quartet itself: the musicians play between the lines without pause, and the instruments gradually go out of tune, so that the ensemble becomes an image of a community that is no longer in tune together. For Spectrum Quartett, the recording marks a return to a project they were already involved in at its stage origin. The album is available digitally via Bandcamp, and its release was supported by the Slovak Arts Council. GREGI.NET ↗
