Franz Reindl becomes president of the world ice hockey federation

German official Franz Reindl has become the new president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The 71-year-old Reindl won the election at the IIHF congress in Tenerife, where in the second round he defeated Czech candidate Petr Bříza by a vote of 60:57. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Bříza had won the first round of voting, in which he received 48 votes, or 41.03 percent. Reindl received 36 votes, representing 30 percent. Both candidates advanced to the decisive round, and the outcome was ultimately decided by a margin of three votes. kultura.pravda.sk ↗

Reindl had also run for the leadership of world ice hockey in 2021, but was unsuccessful at that time. He has now become the fifteenth president of the IIHF. Bříza, who had been serving as the federation's vice president and was a goaltender in the past, thus did not obtain the highest position in the international ice hockey organization. Tagesspiegel ↗

The election ended in one of the closest results in the federation's history. Reindl will now take over the leadership of the IIHF and will represent world ice hockey at the international level. ta3.com ↗
