Jack McDuff would have turned one hundred. France Musique looks back at his 1989 concert
France Musique dedicated a two-part recording of his 7 March 1989 concert at the Parisian club New Morning to Jack McDuff's centenary. According to the station, McDuff is one of the masters of the Hammond organ and one of the leading figures of hard bop and soul jazz of the sixties. France Musique ↗
According to France Musique, this "architect of groove" did not just mark his own era — he also influenced generations of funk, soul and eventually hip-hop musicians as well. It is precisely the organ figures from his recordings that count among the material producers still reach for today. France Musique ↗
Brother Jack McDuff, born Eugene McDuffy, was born on 17 September 1926 in Champaign, Illinois, and died in January 2001 in Minneapolis. In the mid-1960s, he gave young guitarist George Benson his first big opportunity within his band; his best-known records include Live! and The Honeydripper.
His characteristic sound rests on a combination of bass lines played with the feet on the pedals and a percussive strike on the keys — the same combination that defined the sound of the Hammond B-3 in jazz for an entire decade.
On SuperMusic.cz, McDuff has been listed since 2002, but without a single track: his music is instrumental, so lyrics have nothing to stand in for there.
