Singer Dana Margolin of Porridge Radio releases debut solo single Big Beautiful Sound

Dana Margolin, singer and songwriter of the British indie rock band Porridge Radio, has released her debut solo single Big Beautiful Sound. The song rests on gentle guitars, squealing synthesizers and her voice, growing gradually from sad calm to a sweeping climax. The black-and-white video for it was shot by directors Mike Mills and Joe Nankin. DIY ↗

The single was made in a converted barn in the Somerset countryside, where Margolin worked with Sam Yardley and Dan Hutchins. The trio used instruments and equipment from car boot sales and eBay while recording, and set themselves the constraint that everything had to fit on an eight-track recorder. "We go all the way down together, down a spiral staircase into the centre of the earth where there is darkness and nothing can grow, and we chose to go there, and wasn't it fun, and right there at the deepest depths of the journey is a glowing ember, something luminous, a big and beautiful sound," Margolin says of the song. Porridge Radio announced their breakup without animosity last year and said their farewell in Glasgow in December 2025, the Spanish outlet Rockdelux recalls. Margolin wrote on social media that it is "the first song I'm releasing under my own name," and that it is "about finding the magic again once you've lost it." Rockdelux ↗

She will present the new material in the fall: on October 7 at a standalone concert at The Golden Hinde in London, at the Sonus Art festival in Guimarães and Sŵn in Cardiff, and on a series of dates opening for American singer Ezra Furman. DIY ↗
