Berlin faces state elections on Sunday, in which the housing crisis and the rising support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) have become among the main topics. The CDU and the Left Party are the main contenders for leadership of the city, and according to pre-election polls they enter the vote nearly tied. El Pais ↗

The campaign is also focused on the question of how to address the shortage of affordable housing. Part of the public debate is a proposal to expropriate large corporations, which divides voters. The differing mood between younger and older residents of Berlin also plays a significant role. Tagesspiegel ↗

The AfD is expected to seek to roughly double its previous election result and achieve support of around 18 percent. Such a result would mean a significant strengthening of the party in the Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus and would influence the post-election negotiations on forming the city's leadership.

The election result may determine not only who gains control of the Red City Hall, but also the future direction of housing policy in the capital. Attention will focus in particular on whether the CDU or the Left Party can translate their narrow support into an election victory, and on what role the rise of the AfD will play. Spiegel.de ↗
