Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready to play with Soundgarden: "I brought them pizza just so I could be there"
Mike McCready is fulfilling one of his biggest dreams. The Pearl Jam guitarist will perform alongside Soundgarden at the Seattle Seahawks' season-opening game on September 9, and he isn't hiding his excitement. On the occasion, he revealed that he once used to sneak into their rehearsals in Seattle. American Songwriter ↗
"I showed up there and brought them pizza, just so I could be there. I love those guys, I love every one of them," said the Seattle-born musician. He also hinted to fans that they can expect "something cool" at halftime. American Songwriter ↗
"It's incredibly special, incredibly moving, intense. You want to do it well. It's Seattle," he says. "We want to play as well as we can for Seattle, because we're from here, this is our home. It's a big deal and it's an exciting pressure to be part of." He added that he knows how good it's going to sound — he says they've rehearsed more than enough. "I'll play with those guys anywhere on the planet." American Songwriter ↗
Before the halftime performance, he will also sing the American national anthem, which will open the game between the Seahawks and the New England Patriots. American Songwriter ↗
During the game, a promo video is also set to air in which McCready draws attention to the Washington Innocence Project — an organization helping the wrongfully convicted, which the club supports and which the guitarist's wife, Ashley O'Connor McCready, chairs as head of the board of directors. "When you have a spotlight and you have stars — musicians or a star quarterback — people are going to listen to them. So why not do something that helps?" he asked. American Songwriter ↗
