Poland Demands Fine for Meta Over Weak Fight Against Fraud

Poland has asked the European Commission to impose a fine of approximately 233 million euros on Meta for insufficient action against fraudulent ads and harmful content on its platforms including Facebook. According to the Polish government, the owner of Facebook is not taking sufficiently effective action in controlling harmful ads and false content. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗

Warsaw argues that the problem concerns insufficient control of intermediated content. The objections are directed at how Meta oversees ads and posts that could mislead users or expose them to harmful content. Poland therefore is requesting intervention at the European Union level. novinky.cz ↗

The European Commission is simultaneously conducting continuous dialogue with Meta regarding the so-called addictive design of its social networks. The investigation began in May 2024 and focuses on platform features such as infinite content scrolling, automatic video playback, notifications, and personalized recommendations. hnonline.sk ↗

In July, the Commission preliminarily concluded that the technology giant violates the European Union's digital services regulation. Further developments will depend on the assessment by European authorities as to whether Meta's measures sufficiently address risks associated with advertising, harmful content, and service design.
