Blume promises plan for VW plants as resistance grows

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume appeared before employees of Europe’s largest carmaker in Wolfsburg on Tuesday and announced further cost-cutting measures. According to available information, management wants to prepare reliable prospects for all of the group’s plants within six to twelve months. Spiegel.de ↗

The situation at Volkswagen is, according to Blume, extremely tense. Employees expect an explanation of the next steps, since tens of thousands of jobs are at stake and some reports mention that as many as 100,000 positions could be at risk. Blume stressed that plant closures have not yet been decided, but the group remains in crisis mode and is preparing a far-reaching restructuring. zurnal.pravda.sk ↗

Works council chairwoman Daniela Cavallová sharply criticized the board at the meeting. According to her, employees’ trust in management, especially in Blume, has been damaged. Lower Saxony’s premier Olaf Lies also spoke critically, warning against plant closures and appealing to management to take responsibility toward the workforce. According to him, closing factories does not represent a solution for the future. Tagesspiegel ↗

Tension at Volkswagen therefore remains high ahead of further company meetings. Management will have to explain how it wants to combine savings, maintaining competitiveness and the future of individual plants, while employees and regional politicians expect more specific guarantees.
